| Salt Firing
is a special type of the reduction firing process. Unlike electric kilns, pieces fired with a flame present
have a "reduced" amount of oxygen present. During a reduction firing, the flame seeks oxygen, drawing
it from the pots themselves. The results can be unpredictable. When salt is added to this process,
the sodium from the salt combines with the silica in the clay to produce a "glaze." While some glazes are added for design, some portions are purely the result of salt interacting with the clay body.
Due to the process, the flame & chemicals produce unique patterns and interactions. As such, no
two pieces will be the same. These pieces are one-of-a-kind items. |
